Accountability of the HSE

Asked by John McGuinness (FF, Carlow Kilkenny) about the accountability of the HSE through parliamentary questions, the Minister for Health, James Reilly told the Dail that the HSE was conscious of the need for prompt relies but many questions required large and detailed amounts of statistical data (Dail Eireann, Debates, 31st March 2011, 140).  The HSE had taken a number of initiatives to improve response times, such as a new IT system expected to go live in a few weeks; additional resources to reduce backlogs; the nomination of regional coordinators; a dedicated webpage for Oireachtas members called Rialtas; and an on-line facility to check on the progress of medical card applications.
