2 News: Poverty target

The Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton, informed the Dail of progress made toward the national targets on poverty (Dail Eireann, Debates, 24th April 2013, 773-4).  She spoke of the Social Inclusion Forum of March 2013 and how her department was updating the period January 2011 to December 2012 (in what should be the fourth periodic progress report – ed). The department had recently published the first Social inclusion monitor, where the consistent poverty trend ‘reflected the severity of the economic crisis but also demonstrated the effectiveness of policy given the strong performance of social transfers in protecting those on lowest incomes’.  It was too early to draw firm conclusions as to how poverty could be reduced in the coming years but the government expected that effective and targeted policies would yield future dividends in reaching the national target in the years up to 2020, she concluded ( – ed).

Meantime, Peadar Toibin (SF, Meath W) asked the Minister for Social Protection about the social impact assessment of the 2013 budget (Dail Eireann, Debates, 24th April 2013, 765).  She told him that the assessment was published on 28th March and she hoped that it would inform discussion on the budget and the 2014 one forthcoming.  Four staff contributed to the assessment, with technical assistance using the Switch model from the Economic and Social Research Institute.
