Traveller policy division

The Minister of State at the Department of Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs, Mary White, outlined the work of the Traveller Policy Division, which moved to her department in June 2010.  Funding for the division had been €1.01m in 2008, €826,000 in 2009 and was €417,600 in 2010.  Its principal role was to support interagency working through the city and county development boards and the work of the National Traveller Monitoring and Advisory Committee, with funding support for local projects coming through the Traveller Interagency Fund administered by Pobal (Dail Eireann, Debates, 14th December 2010, 122-123).  The division funded mediation and related initiatives and communications measures such as Traveller Pride Week.  In addition, €1.4m from dormant accounts was approved for Traveller projects over 2009/2010, with €496,044 still to be drawn down. Drawdown of funds for local projects administered by Pobal was slower than anticipated and there had been an 8% reduction in Pobal administration fees.
