Homelessness, the census

Senator Aideen Hayden (Lab, Taoiseach nominee) demanded a debate on homelessness, following publication of the results of the 2011 census which found that 3,808 people were homeless (Seanad Eireann, Debates, 25th September 2012, 16).  Of these, 64 were living on the streets and 498 were children.  Homelessness could be prevented in the majority of cases.   Half were in the workforce, which raised the issue of rent supplement costs.  These cuts were putting people at risk of homelessness and it was important that the Minister of State with responsibility for housing explain the progress being made in transferring rent supplement payments to her department.
