2 News: Code of practice working with people experiencing poverty

The Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton told Aengus O Snodaigh (SF, Dublin SC) that her department was currently giving consideration to completing and publishing a code of practice to support the engagement of people experiencing poverty (Dail Eireann, Debates, 9th February 2012, 147). Such a code, which followed the 2010 European year for combating poverty and social exclusion, had been commissioned by the Department of Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs and compiled with technical assistance before being passed to her department.  The code would provide a comprehensive framework of how government departments and agencies would engage with people experiencing poverty and social exclusion, set out the rationale and benefits of doing so, give guidance of methods of community engagement and approaches, establish what people could expect and apply tried and tested tools and methods of what works.
