2 News: Meeting the Troika

The Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton, responded to questions from Sean Fleming (FF, Laois Offaly) and Dara Calleary (FF, Mayo) on her discussions with the troika on the social welfare system (Dail Eireann, Debates, 16th October 2012, w/a 5-6).  She told them that during their quarterly visits, the ministers for Finance and Public Expenditure and Reform meet with the troika on behalf of the government.  Apart from an initial meeting on taking office, she had not met formally with the troika, but had met the group informally.  Officials from her department met with the troika as part of each quarterly review, where commitments and achievements are noted, with the agreement reviewed to reflect new or follow-on commitments.  After each quarterly review, country reports are published, the most recent in September which related to the June visit and these may identify areas of social welfare for examination.  Any changes are decided by the government, subject to Oireachtas approval.
