2 News: No new plan against racism

Travellers as ethnic minority for decision shortly

The Minister for Justice and Equality, Alan Shatter, told Jonathan O’Brien (SF, Cork NC) that he did not intend to develop a second national action plan against racism  (Dail Eireann, Debates, 22nd November 2011, 532). The national action plan for 2005-8 was very ambitious and wide-ranging and there had been a substantial penetration of anti-racist policies, programmes, activities and awareness raising.  The focus was now on the continued implementation of the sectoral strategies which flowed from the plan.  The minister re-iterated the government’s commitment to combatting racism and spoke of the continued work of the Office for the Promotion of Migrant Integration.  There was already an arts and culture strategy and intercultural education strategy, while work on a workplace diversity strategy was ongoing.

On the issue of the recognition of the Traveller community as an ethnic minority, the minister of state at his department, Kathleen Lynch, told him that there had been further dialogue between her department and representatives of Traveller organizations on 11th November at a seminar under the Council of Europe Convention on national minorities and she intended that the question be shortly before the government for decision (Dail Eireann, Debates, 22nd November 2011, 532-3).
