Active Citizenship

The Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan, told Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin (SF, Cavan – Monaghan) that the work of the Active Citizenship Office had concluded in November 2009.  Responsibility for progressing the active citizenship agenda had transferred to the Department of Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs in May 2010 and then to his department on 1st May 2011.  ‘Given the current resource constraints, it is appropriate that the focus on active citizenship is a pragmatic one where civic engagement is mainstreamed into the work of government at departmental and local government level’ (Dail Eireann, Debates, 1st June 2011, 178).
