€2.5m child poverty initiative

The Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Frances Fitzgerald gave details to Nicky McFadden (FG, Longford – Westmeath) of the area-based child poverty initiative which has a €2.5m allocation for 2013 (Dail Eireann, Debates, 5th February 2013, 340).  The initiative, she said, would build on the Prevention and Early Intervention Programme developed in Tallaght, Darndale and Ballymun, not just continuing it, but implementing programmes that had already been evaluated and proven to work in improving outcomes for children at risk of disadvantage.  It was envisaged that the initiative would be co-funded by a philanthropic organization and discussions were under way.  The number of sites would be expanded from three to six.  The initiative would be overseen by a project team chaired by her department with participation of the relevant departments and agencies.  The project team would agree criteria for the selection of proposals and recommend consortia to government.  The applications process was still in the planning stage but it was not anticipated that additional sites would be selected before the summer.
