EU2020 strategy

Asked by Aengus O Snodaigh (SF, Dublin SC) about Ireland’s approach to implementing the European targets on poverty in the EU2020 strategy, the Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheal Martin told the Dail that the Minister for Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs Pat Carey had sought the advice of an expert group representing the social partners (Dail Eireann, Debates, 12th October 2010, 130-131).  Proposals on a national poverty target would shortly be brought to government.  Work on the identification of Ireland’s national targets was well under way and officials of the European Commission had visited Ireland on 27-8 September to discuss such targets and possible bottlenecks.  There was a follow-up bilateral meeting on 5th October in Brussels.  These national targets would be an important element in the initial raft of Ireland’s National Reform Programme, which is to be prepared by mid-November with final agreement to be reached in April 2011.  It was expected that the European Council would take stock of progress in December.
