FAS cuts

The Minister for Education & Skills, Ruairi Quinn, gave details to Thomas Broughan (Lab, Dublin NC) of the FAS budget cuts for 2011 (Dail Eireann, Debates, 4th May 2011, 538).  He told him that FAS would deliver at least 90,000 places for unemployed people in 2011, down 24,000 on 2010.  The fall was due to a reduced budget for training the unemployed of €37m, the provision of courses of longer duration thus reducing capacity, investment in quality and reductions in FAS staff to due the employment control framework.  The forthcoming jobs initiative would deliver an additional 15,000 places in training, work experience and educational opportunities.
