Free travel under review

The Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton, told the Dail that an interdepartmental working group was examining the free travel scheme for older people: it was at an advanced stage and she expected a report by the end of the year (Dail Eireann, Debates, 18th September 2013, 467-8).  Cost of the scheme in 2012 was €75.6m, paid to CIE, Luas and 90 private operators, with an additional €1.5m to Pobal for the Rural Transport Programme.  The new public services card would interact with the forthcoming integrated ticketing system and provide more detailed information on usage.
