Housing lists: growth of long-term waiting

The Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan, gave details to Thomas Broughan (ind, Dublin NE) of long-term applicants on the housing lists (Dail Eireann, Debates, 16th November 2011, 1128).  The numbers waiting four years or more had risen from 10,000 in 2008 to 24,000 in 2011, from 18% of net need to 25% of net need.  Long-term applicants rose 134%, compared to a rise of 75% on the list as a whole.  As part of the review of the waiting list, he indicated his intention to include time on the list as a factor to be taken into account.  Asked would he divert rent supplement funding into social housing, the told him that each unit would be the cost of rent supplement for 20 households.
