Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission

The Minister for Equality and Justice, Alan Shatter, gave assurances to the Dail that the new Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (IHREC) would conform to the Paris Principles (Dail Eireann, Debates, 6th March 2013, 12-13).  He had consulted with the UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, through a meeting with senior officials on 8th October last, providing a detailed response to questions raised.  He described as ‘a significant achievement’ the provision of €4.409m for IHREC in 2013, maintaining 2012, as demonstrating the government’s commitment to strengthening the institutional framework.  An initial task for the new Commission will be bringing together and integrating the two staff teams, reviewing staffing needs and preparing a business case for new staff and any funding implications would be considered as favourably as possible even in the current climate.  IHREC would have a role in integration issues and some of the functions of the former National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism.
