Joint Policing Committees

The Minister for Justice & Equality, Alan Shatter, informed the Dail on the progress of the Joint Policing Committees, which involve voluntary and community organizations   (Dail Eireann, Debates, 18th May 2011, 744). They had now been established in all local authority areas with the exception of Fermoy, Midleton and Skibbereen.   Meetings were generally open to the public, all documents being available and anyone could send questions in advance of a JPC meeting.  Each committee was obliged to hold public meetings where people had the right to ask questions and make their views known.  It was appropriate, he said to begin a review of the operation of the JPCs and this would be done as part of the programme for the reform of local government.
