Merger of Equality Authority and Human Rights Commission by February

The Minister for Justice and Equality, Alan Shatter, told Jonathan O’Brien (SF, Cork NC) and Catherine Murphy (ind, Kildare N) that he would appoint a small working group to advise him on how he could best merge the Human Rights Commission and Equality Authority into a new Human Rights and Equality Commission (Dail Eireann, Debates, 20th September 2011, 838).  The working group would be drawn from the members of both and from his department’s own staff and informed by recent studies of equality and human rights bodies commissioned by his department, in which a broad range of stakeholder groups was consulted.  He intended that the legislation for the new Commission would be in place by February 2012.
