More on fraud

OB30 reported on estimates of the level of fraud in the social welfare system.  In March, the Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton, gave details to Sean Fleming (FF, Laois Offaly) of total estimated levels of fraud (Dail Eireann, Debates, 1st March 2012, 701).  She told him that the overall level of over-payments in 2010 was estimated at 51,950 worth €83.4m or 0.41% of total departmental spending.  Fraudulent overpayments amounted to €25.9m or 0.1% (within the overall figure – ed).  She described her department’s continuing work against fraud, while noting that 190,000 people legitimately worked and received a social welfare payment at the same time.

She gave further details of 2010 overpayments to Pearse Doherty (SF, Donegal SW) (Dail Eireann, Debates, 1st March 2012, 725-6).  Suspected fraud comprised €25.9m or 31%; customer third party error comprised €42.4m (51%), departmental error €5.2m (6%) and other €9.9m (12%).
