National advocacy programme for older people in residential homes

The Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton, told Aengus O Snodaigh (SF, Dublin SC) that the HSE had established a National Advocacy Programme Alliance to provide independent advocacy services for older people in residential care settings (Dail Eireann, Debates,14th September  2011, 278).  It was being progressed with the help of a working group, which included the Citizens Information Board.  250 volunteers had been trained under the programme, delivering volunteer advocacy services to over 2,500 people in 89 nursing homes and community units.  The service was now moving to Third Age so as to ensure independence from service providers, with funding provided by the HSE.
