New sites for child poverty projects: 26 applications prioritized

The Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Frances Fitzgerald, told Jonathan O’Brien (SF, Cork NC) that 26 applications had been prioritized for the three new sites for projects against child poverty (Dail Eireann, Debates, 4th July 2013, 930-1).  They had been so chosen on the basis of the level of disadvantage in the areas concerned and the child population expected to be impacted.   The 26 would be evaluated over July-September by a working group.  An inter-departmental project team would consider the applications and make proposals to government in October for funding under phase 1.  The remaining 21 proposals would be evaluated over October 2013-January 2014 and good proposals from this cohort, along with any narrowly missed by phase 1, would be considered for phase 2.  Later, she told Bernard Durkan (FG, Kildare N) in the course of a statement on child poverty, that overall funding for the programme was €29.7m (Dail Eireann, Debates, 4th July 2013, 1045-6).
