Review of Joint Policing Committees

The Minister for Justice and Equality, Alan Shatter, told Jonathan O’Brien  (SF, Cork NC) that that the review of the Joint Policing Committee was now well advanced in preparations to contact all members in the coming weeks to ascertain their views as to how the committees were operating and beneficial to the gardai and the local community   (Dail Eireann, Debates, 14th December 2011, 244). He was well aware that some worked better than others.  It was intended that a document be prepared, based on these views, on how the committees might be improved with a view to updating the guidelines.  It was intended to substantially complete this process in the early part of next year.   The role of the committees had also been addressed in a major consultative exercise in the preparation of the white paper on crime, which would lead to a national anti-crime strategy in which the committees would play a role.
