Scheme of Community Support for Older People: now ‘Seniors Alert’

The Minister for Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Pat Carey, told the Dail that since August, he had received 648 applications of support under the Scheme of Community Support for Older People (Dail Eireann, Debates, 11th May 2010, 460-1).  511 had been paid while 37 were being processed and expected to be paid in the coming week.  85 had unresolved queries.  Grants were generally processed in 10 to 12 working days.  Funding was €3.1m in 2010, with €580,000 spent to end April.  A revised scheme would be operational from 24th May and would be called Seniors Alert.  Applications under the old scheme would be processed to 21st May.

On the small grants scheme for voluntary and community organizations, called Grants for locally based community and voluntary organizations, the minister told Willie Penrose (Lab, Westmeath) that this programme had closed on 28th February 2009 and he did not envisage it re-opening in the near future, granted the pressure on public funds (Dail Eireann, Debates, 11th May 2011, 543-4).  This had provided €6.5m, €3.5m and €3.1m in 2007, 2008 and 2009 respectively for refurbishment, equipment, training and research for volunteers and staff.
