United Nations Convention of the Rights of People with Disabilities

The Minister for Community, Equality and Gaeltacht Affairs Pat Carey told David Stanton (FG, Cork E) that it was the government’s intention to ratify the United Nations Convention on the rights of People with Disabilities as quickly as possible and ensure that the necessarily legislative and administrative requirements of the convention are met (Dail Eireann, Debates, 1st July 2010, 432-3). An interdepartmental committee was monitoring the legislative and administrative actions required for the state to ratify the convention. The committee had developed a programme whose work was progressing. One requirement was to bring forward the Mental Capacity Bill, which was the responsibility of the Department of Justice and Law Reform, which it was intended to publish in this parliamentary session. The interdepartmental committee, which his department had chaired since 1st June, had met on six occasions, with its next meeting planned for the autumn.
